Vasculitis Research

Vasculitis is a condition of inflammation of the blood vessels. This can occur in all blood vessels from capillaries near the skin to the largest in the legs and the aorta. Vasculitis is not one specific condition of blood inflammation but represents a consequence of a number of diseases that are autoimmune conditions. An autoimmune disease is one in which the immune system attacks healthy cells instead of unhealthy cells or foreign substances.

In most instances the cause is unknown.  In some cases the cause has been hepatitis viruses, but most of the cases are simply autoimmune flare-ups, the cause of which is unclear.  Inflammation is protection for the body but the immune system mistakenly identifies certain healthy cells as harmful and attacks them. Drugs can help relieve the condition but the doctor must closely monitor the drugs for dangerous side affects.

Regardless of the treatment, a healthy lifestyle of no bad habits, with proper nutrition and exercise will not only benefit this condition but almost all health problems.
