Vaginismus

Vaginismus

Vaginismus is in the category of sexual dysfunctions in which the disorder creates inability to have penetration of the vagina in any manner or form such as in sex, or in gynecological tests by her doctor. The cause of this condition may be either psychological or physical. It is difficult for the doctor to get the correct diagnosis and specific causes of this condition because of the multitude of situations, traumatic events, or underlying physical diseases or abnormalities that could be reasons for the disorder.

Treatment for this condition is similar to all sexual dysfunctions. The doctor must be experienced in treating women with cognitive behavior and physiological issues. The treatment may require an additional doctor who is a psychiatrist with experience in treating patients with sexual dysfunctions. The doctor must have an extensive interview with the patient for history and symptoms. When the doctor is convinced he has a correct diagnosis, treatment should begin.  The doctor has many options for treatment and should select the best treatment that fits the patient’s specific symptoms and underlying problems.

Regardless of the treatment selected, a healthy lifestyle of proper nutrition and exercise will not only benefit this condition, but will benefit almost any health problem.
