Triglycerides
Triglycerides and cholesterol are the major fats that circulate in the arterial system. Fats are essential components of cells: They provide fuel that aids the body's metabolic processes and are valuable for many functions of the body including insulation from cold and protection from injury. Fats or lipids attach to proteins so they can circulate throughout the arterial system. Although fats are a necessary element of the body, they can cause problems if elevated. The normal level of triglycerides is from 10 to 160 milligrams per deciliter of blood and is not considered high until it is above 250. It has not been established whether high levels of triglycerides increase the risk of heart disease, but levels above 800 may lead to pancreatis.
Hyperlipidemia is a high elevation of fats including both triglycerides and cholesterol. This is a temporary condition. It is usually caused from eating an excessive amount of fats and then the body's metabolic system not able to clear them out. People have different rates in clearing fats: Some people can eat large quantities of animal fats and cholesterol levels will not advance higher than 200 milligrams and others on a strict low fat diet will never have a level of cholesterol below 260.
Both cholesterol and triglycerides will respond to the same treatment that lowers the elevated levels. The most effective remedy is a healthy lifestyle of proper nutrition, weight control and exercise. Smoking and excessive intake of alcohol must be eliminated. Proper nutrition means to cut down on animal fats, eat no refined glucose or carbohydrates, eat fruits, vegetables, lean protein, cold water fish, sprouted grain bread, and each day two table spoons of ground flax seed mixed with water, soy milk or fruit juice. The exercise program should be thirty minutes three to six times per week. It isn't necessary to join a club as a thirty minute brisk walk is excellent exercise. Food supplements that help are multivitamins, fish oil and turmeric. Weight control is important and will help almost any disease such as diabetes, heart attack, high blood pressure, arthritis and of course lower cholesterol and triglycerides.
