Tourette Syndrome
Tourette Syndrome is a disorder that almost always begins at an early
age and involves sudden continuous involuntary movements including
jerks, tics, and even talking in the same repetitious pattern. This is
a disorder that can last all day and continue for several months and
then stop. However it may start up again at any time. Many persons who
have Tourette Syndrome will grow out of it before age 18 to 20.
Although this is considered an involuntary disease, many of the
patients can control the jerks and tics, but there is a strong
psychological urge to perform the motions. When the motions are held
back, it usually causes a higher level of activity when they start up.
The cause of the disorder has not been positively identified but it
is considered hereditary as it runs in families. It also may be caused
by abnormalities in the transmitters of the brain. This condition
increases the problems with dyslexia, leads to slower learning
capabilities, and makes impulse control difficult. Many people with the
disease become overly aggressive. The involuntary vocal problems make
normal social activities extremely difficult. At times the person may
suddenly come out with abusive or profane language.
There are many drugs that can give some relief, but most of the
drugs have side affects that are more damaging than the disease.
Tourette Syndrome should be under a doctor’s care for the most
effective treatment. Regardless of the treatment, a healthy lifestyle
will help to prevent and benefit this condition or almost any health
problem. For more information, view my articles on “Keys to the Century
