Thyroid Cancer

Thyroid Cancer Research

Thyroid cancer is usually a mild form of cancer. It does not enlarge the thyroid because the cancer creates small growths within the thyroid. The small nodules or growths that grow in the thyroid may not be malignant. If there is only one nodule it is more likely to be cancer than if there are several nodules in the thyroid. The small growths usually do not cause hyperthyroidism because the nodules are unable to absorb iodine which is necessary for the production of hormones. The first indication of thyroid cancer could be a lump in the throat with no symptoms of pain. When this happens the doctor needs to conduct several tests for confirmation of cancer. Since most of the thyroid growths are benign, no cures are necessary.

Papillary cancer accounts for most of thyroid cancers and is treated with surgery by removing the cancerous growth and the surrounding tissues. This effectively stops the cancer. Follicular cancer accounts for a small portion of thyroid cancers, but it is aggressive and could spread quickly to other body areas. Surgery may be necessary for treatment by removing the thyroid gland and the cancer that has spread. The rarest thyroid cancer is anaplastic cancer and usually happens to women of advancing age. The cancer develops quickly into a large growth. Most people die in less than a year from this, but a few survive through surgery, drugs and other medical treatments.
