Spinal Hematoma
Spinal hematoma is a rare neurological disease that is usually severe
and many times completely destructive of the nervous system. The causes
of it are not known, but only theoretical at this point. It appears
that each case, in fact, may have a different cause. Certainly the
disease may result from a puncture or hard blow to the spine. This
creates blood flow that results in pressure within the spine.
This would cause sudden pain, tenderness and paralysis in the area
below the wound. It could rapidly progress in severity and cause
complete paralysis and death within a few hours. However, some
recover shortly with no treatment. It is difficult to predict what will
happen.
Any person with a hint of spinal hematoma should immediately go to a
hospital for care, diagnosis and treatment by a neurologist. Treatment
would be directed to stopping the blood flow with anticoagulant drugs
to prevent the blood flow to the brain which could be fatal.
