Spasmodic Torticollis
Spasmodic torticollis is a painful and debilitating condition in which
the neck muscles force the head to rotate or move forward, backward or
sideways. Seldom is the cause known, but in a limited number of cases
the neurological system is weakened from nervous system infections,
drugs, or neck tumors.
When a person has symptoms of spasmodic torticollis, a doctor may be
able to determine the cause by a thorough examination and by
questioning the patient concerning past history of injuries and other
problems. When the cause is known and it is not a disease of the
nervous system, it can generally be treated successfully. When
the cause is not known or if it is a nervous disorder, it may not
respond to treatment. Under a doctor’s care many options are
available, such as massage and physical therapy which will give
temporary relief. Drugs will also relieve the symptoms for a large
number of the patients.
Regardless of the treatment, a healthy lifestyle of proper
nutrition, no unhealthy habits, and exercise will help to prevent or
cure any condition. The proper exercise can be directed by the physical
therapist.
