Snoring Research
Snoring is associated with Sleep Apnea Syndromes. Sleep apnea is a condition in which a person stops breathing while sleeping which is caused by a blockage in either the throat or upper airway; or it can be caused by a malfunction of the part of the brain that controls sleeping. Usually the symptom is snoring with periods of choking or gasping and waking up. If not treated this can result in severe complications such as lack of sleep which causes sleepiness in daytime and lack of energy to conduct daily activities. Eventually it will cause heart failure and pulmonary insufficiency.
The most effective treatment is a healthy lifestyle of exercise, weight control and nutrition. Smoking and alcohol must be eliminated. Other treatments that will help are sleeping on the side instead of back. Many overweight people sleep on their back and this aggravates the condition. Under a doctor's care there are mechanical devices that may help. There are also many natural treatments that have been successful in treatment.
