Shock

Shock Research

When blood pressure is significantly below normal it reaches a condition of shock that is life threatening unless given prompt treatment. Shock is the result of low blood volume, relaxation of blood vessel walls, or impaired pumping action of the heart which causes significantly lower blood pressure. Severe loss of blood can be caused from an accident or it could be caused from internal bleeding such as a bleeding ulcer or a ruptured blood vessel. Severe loss of body fluids can cause shock such as kidney disease, severe diarrhea, or major burns.

If not given prompt treatment, shock may be fatal. When treated the prognosis depends upon a number of factors which include the cause, amount of time before treatment, other illnesses the person has and type of treatment received. The first person on the scene should give first aid treatment if capable of doing so and call 911 for paramedics and an ambulance for transportation to the nearest hospital for emergency treatment. The hospital will have the facilities and personnel to provide the most effective emergency treatment.
