Scleroderma Research
Scleroderma is a chronic disease with indications of deteriorating changes and scarring in joints, scarring of internal organs and sometimes changes in blood vessels. Swelling and thickening of the fingers that cause the fingers to become pale or numb and insensitive in response to cold are other indications. Additional conditions that may develop are pain in joints, problems in swallowing and shortness of breath.
The prognosis is difficult to determine because of the unpredictable progress and course of the disease. Sometimes the disease only affects the skin for a long period of years with no other complications or it can progress quickly to a severe condition and be fatal. No drugs have been effective in stopping the disease but there are some that will relieve various symptoms. There are many options under a doctor's care that will relieve symptoms and slow the progression of the disease. A healthy lifestyle of exercise, weight control, and healthy nutrition will also be beneficial.
