Rotator Cuff Tendinitis
Rotator cuff tendinitis is a condition in which the muscles and tendons of the rotator cuff are damaged. The tendons are usually injured in a sport that requires activity of the arm and shoulder above the head such as tennis, throwing a ball or serving in any racket game. Although this usually happens in sports, it could happen at work or at home in any activity that requires weights to be lifted overhead. It could happen with one swing of the arm when extreme force is used or most likely it will happen with constant recurring overhead motions such as a pitcher in baseball. Initially the pain is only when the arm and shoulder are used in an overhead motion, but if not treated the pain will be more severe and it will be constant whether at ease or exercising.
Resting the arm and shoulder are the best treatment. After the swelling goes down, exercises that will strengthen the shoulder will be beneficial, but exercises that involves the overhead arm and shoulder or any exercise that is painful should be avoided. If it is a severely injured rotator cuff that does not heal after a year, surgery may be an option.
