Rosacea

Rosacea Research

Rosacea is a condition of the skin in which redness, small pimples, and broken blood vessels are produced on the skin. This disorder usually appears on the face but occasionally it develops in other areas. The cause is not known but it happens to most people at middle age or later who are fair skinned. This may indicate that sunrays may have some bearing on the cause because some results of sunrays do not develop until many years after exposure. Sometimes the skin thickens around the nose thus causing it to bulge out and redden which is called rhinophyma. Alcoholics may develop rhinophyma along with rosacea.

Avoidance of foods that cause the blood vessels to dilate such as alcohol, spicy foods, drinks or food containing caffeine will help in the treatment. Under care of a dermatologist antibiotics may help and certain skin medication and substances have beneficial results. If rhinophyma does not improve it may require surgery.
