Psoriasis

Psoriasis

Psoriasis is a chronic condition that affects the skin and can be identified by patches or bumps of various sizes that develop on the elbows, knees, back, buttocks and scalp. Psoriasis begins as small patches that become flaky with small bumps that surround the area. This is an annoying condition that can affect many areas including the nails which make them thick and deformed. Even the eyes and armpits are sometimes affected. If the condition is mild there are usually no other symptoms and it seldom itches. When the patches disappear the skin has a normal appearance and no treatment is required. Some people have severe problems with psoriasis that include symptoms similar to rheumatoid arthritis.

A few small plaques will respond rapidly to treatment. There are many moisturizers, creams and ointments that will benefit the condition by applying once or twice daily. Other therapies are vitamin D and ultraviolet light. Because the use of ultraviolet light may cause skin cancer, it should be under a doctor's care. In severe cases a doctor can prescribe drugs and other medications.
