Premenstrual Syndrome

Premenstrual Syndrome

Premenstrual syndrome is a condition in which women may have one or two weeks before the menstrual period that consists of periods of unrest and nervousness including depression, headaches and many other symptoms. This condition may be associated with the changes in the progesterone and estrogen levels that normally occur in the menstrual cycle.

Treatment under a doctor's care of contraceptives containing estrogen and progestin may reduce fluctuations in the estrogen and progesterone levels. Sometimes fluid retention can be helped by reducing the amount of salt in the diet or with mild diuretics prior to the time symptoms usually occur. A healthy lifestyle of exercise, weight control and nutrition which includes a multivitamin and elimination of refined glucose, refined carbohydrates and reduction of caffeine will be beneficial.
