Popliteus Tendinitis

Popliteus Tendinitis

Popliteus tendinitis is a tear in the popliteus tendon. A tendon is a strong cord that attaches a bone to a muscle. The popliteus tendon is a tendon in the foot that is attached to the thigh bone. This tendon prevents the foot and lower leg from twisting outward when running. Running downhill puts excessive strain on the tendon.

If you have a foot injury that is painful when walking or running, a diagnosis should be made by a doctor familiar with sports injuries.  It can develop into a serious injury if running is continued with the injury.

The most effective treatment is rest.  No running should be done until the legs are completely free of all pain. After the pain ceases, running should be still be discontinued for another three weeks. Other exercises than running can be anything that puts no pressure on the foot. The doctor that is an expert on sports injuries should recommend other exercises or treatments such as different shoes or shoe insets.
