Polyneuropathy

Polyneuropathy

Polyneuropathy is a peripheral nerve disease.  It is a neurological disorder that involves a large number of peripheral nerves in many body parts that all malfunction at the same time. This differs from most peripheral nerve disorders that have symptoms in only one part of the body at the same time. Polyneuropathy may be acute and start suddenly, or it could be a chronic condition that persists for months or years.

There are a wide variety of causes for polyneuropathy which include vitamin D deficiency, an infection by bacteria which produces a toxin, cancer, metabolic diseases, liver disease, genetic disorders, polio, spinal muscular atrophy, diabetes, endocrine disease, kidney failure, amyloidosis, severe malnutrition, and motor neuron disorders.

Symptoms include numbness and inability to feel vibration or know the position of arms or legs. Peripheral nerve disorders damage the communication path from the affected nerves to the brain and many of the injuries to the affected nerve do not convey any symptoms to the brain. This causes injuries that aggravate and increase the amount of damage.

Anyone with symptoms of nerve damage should be under immediate care of a neurologist for diagnosis and effective treatment.  The doctor can only give the most effective treatment when the diagnosis identifies the type of nerve disorder and the causes.

Regardless of the treatment, a healthy lifestyle along with proper nutrition and an exercise program will not only benefit and help prevent this disorder, but almost any health problem.
