Pneumonia Research
Pneumonia is a bacteria or virus infection of the lungs. There are many different types of pneumonia usually identified by the organism that causes the infection. Adults are usually infected with bacteria including streptococcus, pneumoniae, legionella, or viruses including chicken pox and influenza. Smokers, diabetics, alcoholics, people with heart failure, people with AIDS, the very young, the elderly, and people with an impaired immune system are at high risk of developing pneumonia.
Symptoms of pneumonia are breathing difficulties, a cough with sputum, and chills and fever. The doctor can also listen to the chest to make the diagnosis. If necessary, a chest x-ray can be made as well as other procedures for diagnosis. For people at high risk, deep-breathing exercises will help clear the airways. A healthy lifestyle of weight control, nutrition and exercise is the best preventative. People with mild cases can take antibiotics at home for treatment, but high-risk people who are elderly, or have other serious diseases along with pneumonia are usually hospitalized for the most effective medication and treatment.
