What cause boils will not affect hepatitis or liver problems. Abscesses are infections of the skin by staphylococcal. Their usual location is on the face or neck but may infect the breast or buttock and the infecton starts in hair follicles. Abscesses are like pimples, but are much larger, are temder and have pus in the center. Abscesses are extremely contagious and could infect an entire group, such as teenagers in a basketball or football camp all using the same quarters, dining area, showers, and usually with careless hygiene. Carbuncles are clusters of abscesses and are much more severe, capable of causing fever and increasing pain far above single abscess infections. The favorite location for a carbluncle is the back of the neck. A severe abscess can be treated successfully by a doctor or nurse by lancing the abscess and draining the pus. The abscess must be carefully checked to make sure that all pus is removed from the abscess. A small remainder can be removed with a saline solution. If the abscess is completely free of pus no antibiotics are necessary and no further treatment is required unless the abscess in located near the nose. Abscesses most ommonly infect in the hair follicles from bacteria on the face, neck or arms; however, infections may begin on the skin at any part of the body if there is any kind of injury that breaks the skin. Because the infection of an abcess is so contagious, it may be present on the skin and penetrate at the point of injury. The abscess can cause severe pain with tenderness, pus in the center, and a feeling of fluid in the area. The skin surrounding the area must be kept clean to prevent the abscess from infecting adjoining skin which if infected could develop into a serious condition of cellulite. The best prevention for boils and also to prevent infection to others is strict hygiene. The skin should be kept clean with soap. A soap which has an anti-bacterial substance will provide the most protection. A single boil may be eliminated by moist heat with no squeezing or further treatment.
