Abscesses are infections of the skin by staphylococcal bacterium. Abscesses most commonly appear on the face or neck, but less often on the breast or buttocks. Abscesses are like pimples, but much larger, are tender. and have pus in the center. A single boil may be eliminated with nothing more than moist heat. No squeezing or additional treatment is necessary. Carbuncles are clusters of abscesses, but are much more painful than single abscesses. The favorite location of carbuncles is the back of the neck.

The best prevention for abscesses and also to prevent infections in others is strict hygiene. The skin must be kept clean with soap. An anti-bacterial soap will provide the most protection. A severe abscess can be successfully treated by a doctor who will lance the abscess and drain the pus. All pus must be removed, but a small remainder can be removed by the doctor with a salt solution. If the abscess is completely free of pus, no more treatment will be needed. However, if an ascess is near the nose, it should not be lanced. Instead the doctor should use oral antibiotics to remedy the abscess. This is necessary to avoid the danger of brain infection.
