The bacteria could be present on the skin and penetrate at the point of injury. The abscess can cause severe pain with tenderness and pus in the center. The skin around the abscess must be kept clean to keep the abscess from infecting the surrounding area which if infected could develop into a serious condition of cellulite. A severe abscess can be successfully treated under a doctor's direction by lancing the abscess and draining out the pus. The doctor needs to make sure all pus is removed from the abscess. A small remainder can be removed with a salt solution. If the abscess is completely free of the pus, no further treatment is needed.
