The infections are almost always in hair follicles, but infections can be any place on the body. Abscesses are like pimples but more tender, larger and have pus in the center. The infections are extremely contagious and could infect large groups such as teenagers at a football or basketball camp that all use the same facilities of showers, quarters and eating. Large clusters of abscesses are much more severe, more painful and capable of causing fever and pain far above single abscesses. The clusters favorite spot to locate is on the back of the neck.

The best prevention for abscesses and also to protect spreading is to practice good hygiene. The skin must be kept clean with soap. A soap that has an anti-bacterial substance will provide the best protection. Single abscesses may be cleared with moist heat with no squeezing or further treatment needed. However, if the infection is near the nose, it is a dangerous condition as the infection could spread to the brain. Infections of this type should be under a doctor's care for treatment with oral antibiotics. A sample of the pus should be examined in a laboratory which will give the doctor information on the most effective antibiotic to use.
