Abscesses are infections of the skin by bacteria. They usually appear on the face, neck, or arm but occasionally on the breast or buttock and start in the hair follicles. Abscesses are like pimples but much larger, are tender and have pus in the center. Abscess infections are contagious and can infect an entire group such as teenagers at an athletic camp where all use the same facilities with careless and poor hygiene. Carbuncles are clusters of absscesses and are capable of far more fever and pain than single abscesses. The favorite spot for carbuncles is the back of the neck. The best prevention for boils amd to prevemt infection to others is strict hygiene. The skin must be kept clean with soap and a soap with anti-bacterial substances will provide the most protection. A single abscess may be eliminated with no more than moist heat with no squeezing or other treatment. However, abscesses near the nose require a doctor's direction for oral antibiotics to avoid the danger of brain infection. This means no squeezing or lancing of abscesses near the nose.

Although most abscesses infect the face, neck or arms, an abscess can infect the skin on any part of the body that has an injury that causes a break in the skin. Because the bacteria that infect abscesses are so contagious, the bacteria may be present on the skin and penetrate at the point of injury. The abscess can cause severe pain, tenderness, and a feeling of fluid in the area. The skin around the abscess must be kept clean to prevent infection in the surrounding area which if infected could develop a severe condition of cellulite. A severe abscess can be treated successfully by a doctor who can lance the abscess and drain the pus. All pus must be removed from the abscess and if there is a small remainder the doctor can clear it with a salt solution. If the abscess is completely free of pus, no further treatment is necessary.
