Abscesses are infections on the skin by staphylococcal bacterium. Abscesses usually appear on the face, neck, or arms, but sometimes on the breast or buttocks. The bacteria usually infect in hair follicles, but could infect on the skin at any part of the body that has an injury that breaks the skin. Abscesses are extremely contagious and could infect an entire group, typically teenagers at an athletic camp that all use the same facilities along with careless and poor hygiene. Pimples are similar to abscesses except abscesses are much larger, are tender and have pus in the center. Carbuncles are clusters of abscesses and has pain that is much more severe than single boils. Carbuncles favorite location is the nape of the neck. A severe abscess can be successfully remedied by a doctor who can lance the abscess and drain out the pus. All pus must be removed but a small remainder can be drained with a salt solution. If the abscess is completely free of all pus, no additional treatment is necessaryi. However, if an abscess is near the nose it should not be lanced or treated with anything but oral antibiotics. This will avoid the danger of brain infection.

The most effective prevention for abscesses and also to prevent infection to others is strict hygiene. The skin must be kept clean with soap and preferably an anti-bacterial soap that provides the most protection. A single abscess can be cleared with nothing more than moist heat. No additional squeezing or treatment is necessary. Although abscesses most oommonly infect on the face or neck in hair follicles, an abscess can infect the skin on any part of the body that has an injury that breaks the skin. The bacteria are contagious and could be on the skin and penetrate at the point of infection. The skin around an abscess must be kept clean to prevent infection in the surrounding area which if infected could develop a dangerous cellulite condition.
