Abscesses usually appear on the face, neck or arms, but sometimes on the breast or buttocks. Abscesses are similar to pimples but differ in that boils are much larger, are tender, and have pus in the center. The abscess infections are extremely contagious and could infect a large group, typically teenagers at an athletic camp where all use the same quarters, dining area, and shower facilities. Carbuncles are clusters of boils, but can be much more painful than single abscesses. The favorite location for carbuncles is the back of the neck. A severe abscess can be successfully treated by a doctor who can lance the abscess and drain out the pus. All the pus must cleared from the abscess but a small remainder can rsemoved by the doctor with a salt solution. If the abscess is completely free of pus, nothing more needs to be done. However, if the abscess is near the nose, it should not be lanced. Instead, the doctor should treat it with oral antibiotics. To get the most effective antibiotic, the doctor should get a sample of the pus and have it examined in a laboratory which will indicate the proper antibiotic for the particular strain of the bacteria. This procedure will avoid the danger of brain infection. Skin boil cure may have no affect on hepatitis or blood sugar.
