Ovarian Cysts

Ovarian Cysts

Ovarian cysts that usually develop during pregnancy sometimes cause painful cramping. Ultrasound scanning is the best method of safely and accurately detecting ovarian cysts. Unless a cyst is definitely cancerous, surgery should be postponed.

It should be delayed at least until the 12th week of pregnancy because most ovarian cyste disappear by the 12th week anyway. In addition, the cyst may be providing hormones that support the pregnancy. It may be necessary to have surgery if the cyst progresses into a larger size or it is tender to touch. Surgery will then be necessary in the event that the cause of the cyst may be cancer or an abcess. No further treatment is necessary after removal of the cyst with surgery.
