Narcissistic Personality Disorder

Narcissistic Personality Disorder

Narcissistic personality disorder is in the category of personality disorders, and is characterized an exaggerated value of one’s own importance.  The afflicted persons have unrealistic fantasies about achievements of intelligence, romance, or power and they want others to extend to them the credit they deserve.

Persons who have narcissistic personality disorder believe they are superior to other people and should be admired by associates and friends. This causes them to exploit others because they feel their needs are much more important than those of their friends or associates. Their behavior is considered as obnoxious by friends and associates who see them as self-centered, haughty, and arrogant.

Persons who have narcissistic personality disorder do not seek treatment because they think there is nothing wrong with them. Treatment may be needed if the afflicted person develops severe physical problems to adverse reactions in their behavior. Treatment for this condition is usually the same as for all personality disorders and is best performed by a psychiatrist experienced in personality disorders.

Regardless of the treatment received, a healthy lifestyle of proper nutrition and exercise will not only benefit this condition, but will benefit almost any health problem.
