Nail Fungus

Nail Fungus

Nail fungus is a ringworm or fungus that infects the nail which is caused by Trichophyton. The nail becomes thickened and deformed and begins in the newly developing part of the nail. This occurs more often in the toe nails and may destroy the nail.

Nail fungus is a stubborn infection that may take several months to eliminate. This may have to be under a doctor's care for proper selection and treatment with drugs. A mild case of nail fungus may be cured with over the counter antifungal creams or medications, but most require more treatment. To avoid further fungal growth the infected area should be kept clean with frequent washing with soap and water. Sometimes a bacterial infection may develop which could require antibiotics. When the infection clears up, strict hygiene will keep it from recurring.
