Nail Discoloration

Nail Discoloration

The color of your nails can indicate several conditions.  An injury such as a heavy object falling on your toe nail can cause the nail to become black. A severe injury to the toenail could cause the nail to drop off. Eventually the nail will grow back many months later. Even though injury may be the cause, all black toenails should be examined by a dermatologist for a possible melanoma skin cancer.

When the nail gets a rainbow of colors such as grey, shades of black, yellow or brown it could be from exposure to chemicals, substances in soaps for vigorous cleaning, or fungal infection.  Eliminating the cause for the discoloration is all that is necessary to clear up the problem. If a nail has to be removed, it may take as much as 24 months for it to grow back.
