Macular Degeneration

Macular Degeneration News

Macular degeneration is the deterioration of the macula - one of the most important parts of the eye. Macular degeneration most commonly affects the elderly. It also affects people with poor immune system from unhealthy lifestyles, those who seldom exercise, exercise no weight control, and who smoke. There are two kinds of macular degeneration. The dry degeneration is the most prevalent as most people have it. The wet degeneration is only a small percentage of the cases and is the advanced condition of the disease.

The symptoms usually begin in one eye with distortions of straight lines to wavy lines and increase to severely damage the eyesight; however, it rarely causes complete blindness. There is little that can be done from a medical standpoint for cure, but prevention as well as help for cure will be benefited by a healthy lifestyle of exercise, proper nutrition and weight control. Many people have been helped with food supplements containing Zinc, N-Acetyl Cysteine, Bilberry, Lutein, Zeaxanthin and Taurine.
