Lactose intolerance to a certain degree affects more than fifty percent of people and it is a condition in which the small intestine is unable to digest certain sugars because of necessary enzymes deficient in the small intestine. When the enzymes do not perform, the sugars are not digested and and the result is diarrhea. The sugars remain and become fermented by bacteria in the large intestine which causes flatulence. Milk and dairy products must be avoided by people affeacted with lactose intolerance.

The treatment for lactose intolerance is to avoid all food containing lactose. The labels on most prodcts state whether the product is lactose free. There are so many products that are lactose free, it is not difficult get all the nutrients necessary contained in dairy products. Calcium is important and in some cases it may be difficult to get sufficient amounts; however, calcium supplements can be taken, if necessary.
