Hypothyroidism

Hypothyroidism Research

When the thyroid gland produces less than the normal amount of hormones, it is a condition of hypothyroidism. The symptoms of hypothyroidism are primarily a slowing down of bodily functions. Consequently, the outward appearance of the person is one of depression - there appears to be a lack of any interest in the surroundings; a listless, droopy manner; face puffed and swollen; and no enthusiasm for living. Older people may appear to be confused, disoriented or demented. If unteated, this condition can develop serious complications.

Treatment of this condition should be under a doctor's care who will give treatment to replace the lack of thyroid hormone. Along with the hormone repacement, a healthy diet will be beneficial. The doctor will try to replace the hormones until hormones reach the normal level. Depending upon the severity of hypothyroidism, the medication may need to be continued indefinitely.
