Hypersomnia Research
Hypersomnia is a condition in which a person needs an inordinate amount
of sleep for no apparent reason. The person has an uncontrollable
desire to fall asleep, usually during unsuitable times such as during
meals, work or a conversation. This need for sleep could be a temporary
condition in an otherwise healthy person or it could be from some
underlying dangerous disease. Conditions that may be the cause are
depression, anxiety, excessively strenuous exercise, and obesity.
This is often a neurological condition and should be under the
direction of a neurologist for diagnosis and effective treatment.
This condition has the same symptoms as narcolepsy and apnea so the
doctor must get a medical history of the patient and have a thorough
discussion with the patient. Drugs can help the condition but the most
effective treatment could be a healthy lifestyle of proper nutrition
and exercise.
