Hypertension is a condition in which the arteries are partially clogged to the extent that the heart must pump harder to keep the fluids moving in the circulatory system. To measure the level of hypertension it takes two readings, the systole is the upper reading when the heart contracts and the diastole is the lower reading when it rests between beats. A reading of 120 over 80 is considered normal. Any level above l40 over 90 would be considered hypertension.

There are usually no symptoms of the condition until a serious complication such as stroke or heart attack occurs. Hypertension is most likely to be discovered in a routine physical exam in the doctor's office. The cause of hypertension in most cases is because of an unhealthy lifestyle of smoking, poor diet, lack of exercise, no weight control and could be eating too much sodium. Drugs can lower the hypertension level, but before taking drugs try a healthy lifestyle of proper nutrition, weight control and exercise.
