Hiccups

Hiccups Research

Hiccups are recurring, uncontrolled contractions of the diaphragm and in sequence the closing of the glottis. Hiccups can be initiated by a stimulus to the nerves that control the diaphragm. Most outbreaks of hiccups are annoying but cause no problems and usually only last a few minutes. Hiccups can start suddenly with no apparent cause and may stop just as suddenly with no treatment. Certain foods such as hot or spicy foods may cause hiccups or more severe hiccups can come from pneumonia or other diseases that affect breathing. The more severe hiccups can last for a long time and may be difficult to control.

There are many home and folk treatments and one is about as good as another and most cause interruption of breathing. Eating crushed ice is a common remedy that works. A stubborn case may require a doctors recommended drug.
