Hamstring

Hamstring Research

The hamstrings are the muscles on the back of the thigh. Injuries to the hamstring are frequent among athletes and are caused because the muscles on the front of the thigh are so much stronger than the hamstring muscles. The hamstring muscles need to be at least sixty percent as strong as the quadriceps muscles to keep from being over powered and injured by the quadriceps muscles.

When the hamstrings are contracted violently it may cause an injury. Treatment for an injury to the hamstring requires rest, an ice pack applied to the muscle, and elevation. When a person has a hamstring injury no exercise should be done that aggravates the muscle but certain exercises are satisfactory if not painful. After the injury heals, strengthening the hamstrings will help prevent future injuries.
