Fish Still Included in Healthy Nutrition?
Since recent research indicates that fish have dangerous levels of
mercury there has been much controversy concerning the health benefits
of fish. It’s true that fish have the good fatty acid omega 3 as well
as low saturated fat and high in protein. But do these benefits
outweigh the risks from mercury? The benefits outweigh the risks
according to a team of researchers at Harvard Medical Center who a
short time ago completed a study on the benefits and dangers of
fish.
Results of this study revealed that the benefits of the right kind of
fish far exceeded the risks. Consumption of the right kind of
fish reduces the death from cardiovascular disease by 36 percent and
reduces death from all diseases and health conditions by 17
percent.
The most nutritional fish are cold water fish such as salmon, sardines,
shrimp, herring and small tuna which all have low levels of mercury.
Avoid farm fish which may be highly contaminated. Fish which are
high in mercury levels should be avoided. These include king mackerel,
sword fish and shark.
