Fantastic Folic Acid
Folic acid is a water soluble B vitamin. So it will dissolve in water
with any excess eliminated by urine. It is a B 9 vitamin, also known as
folate, and is essential for the body. When the U.S. Recommended Daily
Allowance was set at 400 micrograms in 1998, most U.S. producers of
breads and breakfast cereals improved their products with the inclusion
of 40 micrograms of folate.
Folic acid, in conjunction with vitamins B 12 and C, helps produce
DNA, creates new proteins, helps tissues grow, is critical to cell
growth and division, and enables cells to function. It is a protection
from many medical problems that will occur from a deficiency in folate.
Folic acid is best when obtained from raw vegetables and fruits instead
of supplements. The best foods to furnish folic acid are leafy green
vegetables, beans, citrus fruit, fortified breads and cereals, wheat
bran and other whole grains, poultry, pork and liver. Almost all fruits
and vegetables have limited amounts of folate.
In the last few months researchers have discovered remarkable new
anti-aging properties from the use of folate in the amount of 800
micrograms per day - twice the RDA amount of 400 micrograms. Just as
remarkable is the improvement in memory and memory processing speed.
Research also indicates that 800 micrograms a day is the amount that
most lowers the risk of developing Alzheimer’s.
