Estradiol

Estradiol Research

Estradiol is considered the female sex hormone, but it also appears in males and is the major estrogen in humans. Its primary function is on sexuality and reproduction, but it affects more than specifically sexual organs.

Estradiol is a critical component of bone. Low levels of estrogen will prevent normal bone structure and may cause early osteoporosis and loss of bone mass.

Estradiol can be an antioxidant in the brain, functioning as a neuro-protective substance.

Estradiol has a multitude of effects on the liver. The production of proteins such as lipoproteins, binding proteins, and proteins responsible for blood-clotting is affected by estradiol.

Low levels of estradiol in women may require hormone replacement therapy. There are many marketed versions of estradiol that must be given under a doctor’s care.
