Electromyography

Electromyography

Electromyography is a technique used to obtain the electrical discharge levels of muscles at rest and when contracted.  Measurements can also be obtained and recorded by the affect on the nerves surrounding the muscle involved. This procedure is done by forcing an electric needle into the muscle being tested.

The purpose of these tests is to determine if certain diseases are present in the patient. When a person has symptoms of weakness in a muscle or a nerve problem with a muscle, this test will be an important guide to the doctor in determination of the disorder involved. There is a lengthy variety of muscular disorders which includes muscular dystrophy, myasthenia gravis, Parkinson’s, in sports injuries, muscle abnormalities, cerebral palsy, dystonia of muscles, to name just a few.
