Dystonia. Research
Dystonia is a condition in which sustained muscle contractions cause
the body to become fixed in abnormal positions. This disorder may be
caused by multiple activities in the basic transmitters of the brain.
Genetics are the cause of most dystonia, but it could also be caused by
a severe lack of oxygen at some point in life or even by certain drugs.
Anyone at any age can be affected by dystonia and it can affect any
parts of the body and all parts of the body at the same time.
Many cases of dystonia can start at a young age and the symptoms are
mild, but in time the symptoms develop into severe problems which may
cause the patient to be confined to a wheel chair or in bed. An adult
with the disorder might have it affect the arm or face muscles without
spreading to any other part of the body.
Dystonia is a neurological movement disorder and, like many other
diseases of this kind, has very limited options for treatment. There is
much research developing on neurological disorders that are encouraging
because of the stem cell research on animals. For the present, the
patient should be under a doctor’s care for drugs and the most
effective treatment. Regardless of the type of treatment, a
healthy lifestyle of proper nutrition and appropriate exercise will
prevent and benefit this condition or almost any other health
problem. For more information on a healthy lifestyle, view my
