Digestion Research
Digestion is the process of converting food into different substances that will be absorbed as nutrients for the body and discarding as waste substances not usable. Digestion begins in the mouth where food is chewed and given certain enzymes to aid in the digestion. The food goes to the stomach where it receives the major part of the digestive process. The stomach has strong acids that break down the food with enzymes and other digestive fluids that that decompose it chemically. At the acidic level in the stomach and later parts in the digestive process more enzymes are activated and deactivated to extract and process nutrients. The food is then passed to the small intestine where the nutrients are absorbed in the blood stream. The blood then passes through the liver for filtering, removal of toxins and help processing nutrients. The residue from the small intestine goes to the large intestine where water is reabsorbed and left over waste is discharged through the rectum and anus.
