Dependent Personality Disorder
Dependent personality disorder is in the category of personality
disorders in which the person has an inordinate need for other persons
to take care of them. The person cannot make trivial decisions
without an excessive amount of advice and assurance from others. They
lack self-confidence and are unable to launch new programs or
activities, not because of lack of energy but because of fear of
failure. They are extremely fearful of being left to take care of
themselves.
Treatment for dependent personality disorder is similar to the same
treatment as with all personality disorders. It is particularly
difficult to treat because very few of those with this condition will
seek treatment. People with this condition fear receiving treatment
because of the embarrassment of revealing the condition to anyone. This
condition may disappear as a person emerges from the teenage years into
an adulthood. If the disorder becomes extremely troublesome, a
psychotherapist experienced in treating patients with cognitive
behavior and counseling will be helpful. Drugs and psychiatric
treatment have helped some patients, but all options may need to be
used to provide benefits.
Regardless of the treatment selected, a healthy lifestyle of
exercise and proper nutrition will not only benefit this condition but
almost any health problem. For more information on a healthy lifestyle,
