Cough

Cough Research

A cough in an explosive action helps to expel annoying substances from the lungs and airways. One of the most protective methods for the lungs is coughing. Coughing may develop for a number of reasons. The diagnosis of the cause is of great importance because some of the causes may indicate dangerous conditions. A doctor in an examination of the patient usually needs as much information as possible to help with the diagnosis. If the cough produces sputum, it may reveal the cause as a bacterial infection. A smoker may have a chronic dry cough that could be an indication of lung cancer or it could be a result of a prolonged steady period of smoking.

After the doctor confirms the diagnosis, treatment is recommended. If the cough produces a large amount of sputum, treatment is given for the underlying cause, as the sputum is beneficial because of its activity in clearing the airways. If the underlying condition is a bacterial infection, antibiotics are given for the infection and the cough will disappear along with the infection. If the coughing is severe and causes a lot of pain and discomfort, even if it produces a lot of sputum it may have to be treated for the pain relief. Under a doctor's direction there are many options for the drugs. The best long-term treatment for coughing is to adopt a healthy lifestyle of proper nutrition, weight control and exercise plus no smoking.
