Colds and Flu

Colds and Flu

Colds respond to very few medications and nutritional supplements because colds are viral infections. In studies selenium, which is a nutrient for the immune system, is helpful in preventing colds or flu. It is always more effective if you can get selenium from food rather than supplements. Brazil nuts have significant amounts of selenium. Just take one fourth of an ounce a day of these great tasting nuts. That will provide 200 micrograms of selenium. Since too much selenium can have side effects, limit the amount to no more than 200 micrograms per day.

A strong immune system is your best preventive for all kinds of illness. The best method of building a strong immune system is eating a properly nutritional diet. A healthy diet means to eat no refined glucose or carbohydrates, but rather eat fruits, vegetables, lean protein, cold water fish, sardines, whole grains, sprouted grain bread and fiber. The best source of fiber is ground golden brown flax seed mixed with water or soy milk. The best supplements are multivitamins and fish oil. Combine this with an exercise program consisting of thirty minute periods three to six times per week. If you are overweight or obese, cut 25 percent of calories from each meal until you reach your desired weight.
