Chronic Pain

Chronic Pain

Pain is a disagreeable unpleasant condition that indicates that the body is damaged or in danger of injury. Pain may be acute or chronic. Acute pain is a sudden severe pain that is of short duration. Depending on the intensity it may cause an increase in blood pressure, an increase in pulse rate, and rapid breathing.

Chronic pain extends over a long period and lasts for several months or longer. It usually lasts for a month longer than is normal for an illness or condition. It could also be from long term diseases such as cancer, arthritis, diabetes or it could be for a terminal illness. It ordinarily does not affect the heart beat, breathing rate or blood pressure but it does affect sleeping, weight loss and mental attitude.

The doctor makes the diagnosis of the type of pain, the severity of the pain, and any other factor that is relevant and treatment is normally with drugs that range from the mild non-steroidal group to the opioid groups. Almost all opioid drugs consist of some form of opium. During treatment of pain, the underlying cause must be addressed.
