Lipoproteins have two basic elements; the high density lipoproteins that are the good lipoproteins (HDL) which clean the arteries, and the low density lipoproteins that are the bad lipoproteins (LDL) which clog the arteries. To measure the lipoproteins requires a fluid sample from the arteries that is examined in a laboratory. To get the most accurate measurements, the fluid sample should be after a twelve hour fast.

The measurements will show the amount of high density lipoproteins, the amount of the low density lipoproteins and total lipoproteins. The goal is to have a total lipoprotein level within the range of 160 to 200 milligrams with the high density lipoproteins at more than twenty five percent of total lipoproteins. The objective is to get the high density lipoproteins at the highest ratio to total lipoproteins.
