Lipoproteins is one of the two most important fats that circulate in the arteries. Lipoproteins consist mainly of two elements; the high density lipoproteins (HDL) that are the good lipoproteins which clean the arteries, and the low density lipoproteins (LDL) that are the bad lipoproteins which clog the arteries. To measure the lipoprotein level requires a fluid sample from the arteries which must go to a laboratory for examination.

To get correct information the fluid sample should be taken after a 12 hour fast which will measure the total lipoproteins, the total of the high density lipoprotein and the total of low densitiy lipoproteins. The satisfactory level for total lipoproteins is 160 to 200 milligrams with more than 25 percent composed of the high density lipoproteins.
