Buerger's Disease
Buerger's Disease is a disease that only affects smokers by clogging up the medium and small veins in the feet, legs, arms and hands. The cause of this disease is not known because all smokers are not affected but there is no question that cigarette smoking will cause a narrowing of veins and arteries whether or not Buerger's Disease affects the smoker. The first symptoms are cold hands and feet as there is a gradual decline in blood supply to those areas. As the disease progresses, gangrene may develop in the affected areas.
Treatment is to quit smoking. If smoking continues the disease will progress to the point that the affected arms and legs may have to be amputated. In addition to no smoking, a healthy lifestyle of nutrition, weight control and exercise will be beneficial. An exercise program of walking fifteen to thirty minutes per day will improve the blood circulation. The exercise program may have to be limited dependent upon the physical condition of the affected person. To get more blood flow to the legs, the head of the bed should be raised.
