Breast Implants Research
When a woman has a mastectomy she has the option of having a breast implant at the same time. This will save having an extra visit to the hospital as well as confining it to only one anesthesia. For the implant the woman may choose silicone, saline, or tissue taken from another part of her body. There has been much controversy regarding the safety of silicone implants but no definite conclusions have been reached; however, the use of silicone has been significantly reduced because of the possibility that silicone has caused some dangerous complications. Sometimes the silicone leaks out of the sack which results in the implant becoming hard and uncomfortable. In addition silicone may enter the blood stream, but there is no definite proof that this will cause complications in other parts of the body. Implants can be done at any time for cosmetic purposes in addition to the implants when a woman is treated for breast cancer.
The majority of the implants appear to be successful, but there are risks in any surgery. Before the woman decides to have an implant, she should have a consultation with a plastic surgeon that she trusts to get complete information on the risks and benefits of the surgery so that she can make an intelligent decision.
