Boils Research
Boils are infections of the skin by staphylococcal. They usually appear on the face or neck but sometimes infect the breast or buttock and the infection is around hair follicles. Boils are like pimples but much larger, are tender, and have pus in the center. The boils infections are contagious and could happen to a group living close together, typically teenagers with poor hygiene. Carbuncles are clusters of boils and are much more severe, capable of causing fever and increasing pain above single boil infections. The favorite spot for carbuncles is the back of the neck.
The best prevention for boils and also to prevent infection to others is good hygiene. The skin must be kept clean with soap. A soap which has an anti-bacterial substance will provide the most protection. A single boil may be eliminated by moist heat with no squeezing or further treatment. Boils that occur near the nose are more dangerous as they could spread to the brain so doctors should give oral antibiotics for this. The doctor can get a sample of the pus and a laboratory examination will provide information for the most effective antibiotic treatment.
